An industry leader in fly-tying supplies, the client made it clear that their customers were expert in the raw materials they offered. Sporting our best thinking-caps, Prevailing Winds arrived at a fresh approach: rather than inform the already informed, entertain. Playful irreverence follows.
Speckled Bustard Substitute Feathers
Our Bustard feather impersonators pay humble homage to this most handsome dweller of the African plains. So striking a match, were you to have a Speckled Bustard discern between one of its own and our masterful substitutes, you’d have one stumped bird. Like so many of our products, these feathers are in very short supply. Don’t let this be the one that got away.
Lady Amherst’s pheasant Tails
A proud member of genus Chrysolophus, the Lady Amherst pheasant boasts a most extraordinary complement of tail feathers. And our supply of complete tails flirts with perfection. Rarely are such specimens available—yes, you’re Blue Moon shows high in the sky. These masterworks of nature are so gorgeous, so plenary, we strongly caution those of suspect constitution to handle them while seated and well supervised.
Substitute Swan Feathers
These huge, comely specimens represent the best of the best. Selected for size (will dress up to 6/0 hooks) and purity (no stress-marking), our feathers will deliver a knowing smile to the most fickle salmon fly-tyers and, regrettably, would the vanity of the proudest swan. Available in robust colors.
White Turkey Tails
Easy to come by, one would assume? Unfortunately not. Today’s farm raised turkeys haven’t the luxury of time to bring their feathers to full and lush maturation. Donegal is not deterred. We’ll scour 50 lbs. of feathers for a few, ripe, unmarred gems. Buy’em when you see’em. Stock is periodic and always limited.
Widgeon Flanks
Flanks from this shy, blue-billed quacker are large and bear markings similar to those of the Teal. It’s well every fly-tyer’s time to tuck away of these versatile flanks for a rainy day.
Bronze Mallard Feathers
When size matters, look no further than our male Bronze Mallard jumbo shoulder-feathers. To gratify discriminating fly-tyers, Donegal’s intrepid harvesters risked more than their reputations to scavenge away a few choice plumes from these irascible water-foul. Mallard quills have long served as key components for several traditional salmon fly patterns. Tough to find in this condition.
Saltwater Strung Saddle Hackle
Modesty aside, nobody does strung saddle hackle like Donegal does strung saddle hackle. We process our hackle in-house and offer a variety of sizes and colors. Don’t short-change your salmon, saltwater and steelhead flies. Use Donegal prime strung saddle hackle.
Natural Twisted Gut
In a word, vintage. Some five and twenty years ago, stumbled on the mother lode. Beautiful, classic silk worm gut—the clever product of the industrious silkworm, nurturing mulberry tree leaves, and a lenient Italian climate. Our twisted gut, would to perfection using our antique gut-twister, is an indispensable ingredient for shaping impeccable hook eyes.

A renowned addiction treatment institution turned to Prevailing Winds for help in crafting language for an web-based, interactive platform for their young adults program. The content needed to be engaging, playful, audience appropriate, and motivating. We obliged.
What Vulnerability is Not...THROUGH THE LENS OF STAR WARS
The word makes us cringe: vulnerable. Many things come to mind. Negative things. So allow us the opportunity to knock down a few of these negatives. And why Star Wars, you ask? The parallels between addiction and aspects of the Star Wars saga are simply too good to pass on. Look no further than a young Anakin Skywalker: suffering from a bit of stress, carrying some hefty baggage, and falling prey to the dark side of the force. Didn’t turn out to well for him, did it? And yet, redemption came.​

Being weak. In being vulnerable with another—in letting our defenses down and being brutally honest—we are demonstrating strength, confidence, and a deep belief in ourselves. Consider Obi Wan Kenobi. He lowered his weapon in his dual with Vader and became stronger than ever. Don’t worry. You won’t have to dodge or parry red lightsabers in your program of recovery.

Puts you at risk. Not if you properly choose with whom to be vulnerable. Han chose to be vulnerable with Lando and it earned him a carbonite bath and a quality time with a large, angry worm. You choose more carefully. A sponsor. A therapist. A trustworthy member of a recovery fellowship. Someone who has walked the same road and can empathize. Someone who gets it and won’t judge.

The rewards aren’t worth the effort. Not worth it? A leg-up on clean and sober? A healthy, productive, joyous and free life? I’d say that would be worth a little effort. We’re not talking about sneaking onto the Death Star effort. This is manageable. You can do this and the rewards are well worth the risk.

Giving anything up. The only thing you stand to lose in opening up to someone who will listen, emphasize, and offer you support is a weight off your shoulders. And you will likely gain some peace of mind in return. Sure, it took Finn of The Force Awakens some time to muster the courage to confess his stormtrooper past to Rey. But soon thereafter, he found himself living the hero’s life. Even got to hang-tight with a Wookiee. Does it get any better?
